Keskidee, a small Jamaican bird resilient in the face of hardship, is also the name of a self-help black arts centre in London, and the theatre group who work there. Keskidee's actors and musicians were brought to New Zealand to work with communities who face similar day-to-day dilemmas and who might be encouraged to express their frustrations and anger in drama, poetry and music. Keskidee were to act as a catalyst. the film shows some of their work and their response to the people they met. Tribal elders try to show keskidee the depth of Maori roots in the land, and the complexity and pain of their present struggles: against the loss of Aroha; against the laws of pen and paper; the alienation of their land; the suppression of their language; the devaluation of their people and culture.

Okay Keskidee! Let Me See Inside is a love letter to the UK Caribbean diaspora, exploring black histories, physical spaces and notions of community. The site of the Keskidee Centre, a pioneering Afro-Caribbean cultural centre, is now occupied by luxury apartments. The closure of such valued spaces where people could gather and organise coincided with the rise of a political discourse which led to a lack of documentation of Black Caribbean pasts. Working on the surface of the film image itself – making use of a rostrum camera and optical printer – filmmaker Rhea Storr reflects on the histories that remain trapped in the archive and how capitalism has affected our connection to the past.

Aroha depicts a young Māori chief's daughter who embraces the modernity of the Pākehā world (attending university in Wellington) while confronting her place with her own people (Te Arawa) and traditions at home. The NFU-produced dramatisation is didactic but largely sensitive in making Aroha's story represent contemporary Māori dilemmas (noted anthropologist Ernest Beaglehole was the cultural advisor). Watch out for some musical treats, including an instrumental version of classic Kiwi song, 'Blue Smoke' and a performance of the action song 'Me He Manu Rere'.
